Heat shrink boot adapters attach to the tail end of a connector where the wires terminate. They are meant to provide an adequate surface area for a shrink boot to attach. Most connectors have assembly threads or some other attachment method on their rear side for some form of adapter. The advantage of an adapter is that the same connector can have a variety of wire configurations and still get an appropriate heat shrink boot for each one, as many different adapter sizes can fit the same connector. This is a type of backshell methodology, an often necessary protection for both the contacts within the connector and the wires near the connection terminal. Not only forming a foundation and structural support for the heat shrink boot, the adapters also can provide additional protection by their own construction. Being attached directly to the connector, they provide structural support, and EMI backshells also provide EMI radiation shielding for signal integrity. They also provide a seal against environmental elements. They also provide rotational capability so that the wires contained within are more adaptable to connecting angles. Circular connector backshells and accessories are the perfect shape because it is both the easiest attachment geometry as well as the easiest shrink boot coverage possible.
