Cellular Modules
Cellular modules are devices that allow for machine to machine (M2M) connectivity across a variety of communication networks. Everything from phones, cars, eBook readers, and vending machines can have cellular modules installed in them. The cellular module integrated circuit (IC) chip can enable numerous functions on a device from voice and text communication, data transmission, and GPS. They are most commonly utilized in cellular phones to connect two or more users over specific radio and frequency bands. The two most common in the United States and abroad are Global System for Mobile (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), although GSM is more prevalent outside of the US. Different types of cellular modules are 2G, 3G, and 4G. Cellular data transmission speeds go up from 2G where speeds are rated in a few tens of kilobits per second (Kbps) to the current release of 4G LTE of 100 Megabits per second (Mbps).
