For Arduino Uno-based projects that require high quality audio, try the Wave Shield from Adafruit. This DIY kit is capable of playing 22kHz 12-bit uncompressed WAV audio files over a mono output, which can be split into left and right channels. The board itself has an SD card reader for reading and storing your audio files from FAT16/32-formatted SD/MMC cards. It also has a volume control-wheel potentiometer, as well as an embedded DC to AC converter, op-amp and audio filter to ensure crisp near-CD quality sound. Simply solder together the easy-to make kit and you're ready to play asychronous audio in your Arduino project!
