A Wiser smart city and smart building

With the development of technology, many annoying events in daily life, such as traffic flow and light signal control, building lighting and air conditioning control, can be solved with the help of technology. This article will show you the current developments in smart city and smart building and the relevant solutions introduced by ADI.

Using advanced traffic control systems to realize intelligent transportation

An Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) is a kind of self- calibrating traffic control solution which can adjust the change time of traffic signals automatically according to real-time traffic conditions to optimize traffic flow. With many advantages, ATCS is a key component of the rapidly growing smart transportation or Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) market. The current global ITS market output value is about US$ 4 billion, which is expected to grow to US$ 22 billion at a compound annual growth rate of 33% by 2022.

The main advantages of ATCS include increasing traffic flow by as much as 50%, reducing traffic time by as much as 25%, reducing the number of parking, accidents and collisions, responding to current traffic conditions and fluctuations more quickly, and reducing fuel consumption and pollution. In addition, due to reducing delays and time wasted in traffic, it will improve driver satisfaction and raise economic productivity.

With the growth of transportation demand and the popularity of smart city planning, ATCS has become an increasingly important area of investment. Due to the waste of time in traffic congestion, as well as the waste of fuel and air pollution, the economic productivity value of billions of dollars has been lost. Therefore, the demand for better traffic management solutions is increasing.

Typically used to optimize the switching time of traffic signals, ATCS will adjust the switching of traffic signals based on the length of traffic queues, average traffic speed, travel time/delay of trunk lines, stopping times, delays at intersections, unexpected events (such as accidents, construction, or breakdowns), pedestrian movement, etc.

ATCS helps solve many traffic congestion problems, restore lost productivity, and further support the economic development in the 21st century when building infrastructure. Therefore, countries, states, and cities around the world are seriously considering using next-generation ATCS solutions to transform their infrastructure, providing great growth opportunities for companies that develop, deploy, and maintain ATCS solutions, and for companies that build global infrastructure to meet future needs.

Complete ATCS multi-channel microwave radar solutions

In order to meet the urgent market demands of ATCS, ADI has introduced ATCS multi-channel microwave radar, which is a cost-effective solution featuring simpler installation, minimal maintenance requirements, and supporting a long range of up to 200m without being affected by light conditions, dust, dirt, or moisture. The multi-channel system can monitor the traffic in multiple lanes at the same time, and can detect, track, and monitor the speed and direction of moving objects as small as 70cm.

The ATCS detector technology adopted in this system includes an induction loop, video camera, microwave radar, aggregated cell phone signals, and so on. This ATCS full signal chain solution based on 24 GHz radar from ADI is a complete bit-to-antenna solution from the same vendor. The multi-channel system can support multiple objection detection and tracking, and has a larger field of vision. Compared with using multiple single-channel radar chips, it costs less and has the most advanced performance, the best angular resolution, 1.5 times detection range, 2 times sensitivity and low power consumption, and flexibility and scalability, and unrestricted design options different from fully integrated single-chip radar, and can be easily scaled to multiple of 4 channels.

Intelligent visual perception technology for smart cities and smart building

ADI has introduced embedded visual sensing modules for smart city and building applications, designed for various emerging real-time, smart city and smart building applications, such as parking, traffic monitoring, and municipal lighting control. ADIS1700x brings advanced imaging and intelligence to edge application. The image sensor can realize clear and accurate imaging under extremely bright and dark conditions. It can also generate output contrast at pixel level, thus greatly reducing processing load. It also allows on-board algorithms to be provided at-the-node analysis, so it can accurately and reliably distinguish different objects, such as judging whether it is a person or a vehicle. In addition, the operation or processing of the data of the decision not only can be carried out locally, but also can be carried out by transmitting the data to the edge cloud at present, thus greatly improving the latency, bandwidth, power consumption, cost, and effectiveness of cloud applications.

Target applications of ADIS1700x include smart city video analysis, parking space monitoring, parking violation enforcement, traffic queue length detection, industrial analysis and lighting. The device measures 45mm × 45mm, features a 400 MHz Blackfin® processor and consumes only 110 mW for low-power, low-cost imaging at the edge, is conformal coating and certifications for outdoor operation, has a choice of 110° or 67° horizontal viewing angle (HFOV), is a high dynamic range image sensor (130 dB), and can be linked to USB 2.0 HOST interface-compatible devices, including single-board computers, can be used for evaluation purposes as well as for mass deployments.

The ADIS1700x is the main active component, using an ADSP-BF707WCCPZ-4 processor and ADVS200x (QVGA ultra-high dynamic range logarithmic sensor) image sensor to support a 130dB dynamic range. The ADIS17001 provides a 110° horizontal viewing angle lens, while the ADIS17002 provides a 67° viewing angle lens, and supports power management and USB interface. The ADIS1700x uses a 5V supply voltage, has an IP60 protection level, operates from -40℃ to +85℃, supports 10 kV ESD interface protection, programmable operation and control for environment recognition, and supports edge tracking and homography analysis algorithms for tracking and counting object motion.

Headcount solution in smart building

About 28% of global energy-related CO2 emissions are caused by powering buildings. With the change of consumer demand, the increase of greenhouse gases and atmospheric temperature, and the explosive growth of the number of connected devices, there is no end in sight to the global demand for energy. In addition, lighting and HVAC consume 64% of building energy, so if we can have an in-depth understanding of the usage and people in the defined space to make more informed decisions in building management, such as reducing the demand for lighting or HVAC according to demand, we can greatly reduce energy waste.

In order to improve the operational efficiency of buildings, EagleEye™ advanced technology introduced by ADI can significantly reduce electricity consumption and emissions, and make the operation of buildings more efficient. ADI EagleEye supports complete, end-to-end, edge-based hardware and software technology solutions, providing a unique combination of intelligent software and high-performance hardware. ADI EagleEye's seamless integration technology provides unprecedented management insight through accurate, easy-to-use, private and secure occupancy counting solutions, resulting in space optimization, employee welfare, and energy saving.

ADI EagleEye is a complete headcount solution. Its advanced software has proprietary algorithms with the highest accuracy, intelligent design such as a software development kit (SDK) which is automatically updated regularly and moved across platforms, and matched with reliable and high-performance sensor platform hardware. The ADSP-BF707 Blackfin DSP, which includes built-in high-performance enhanced Blackfin® core, features low system power consumption, an crypto accelerator, edge image processing and secure boot, provides real-time and accurate data, ensures secure and private, can be easily integrated, has low bandwidth scalability, and has smarter management insight and added value.

Conclusion

With the rapid development of technologies such as Internet of Things, sensors and artificial intelligence, the application of technology extends from individuals and enterprises to larger buildings and cities, making people live more intelligent and more convenient, which also means that the relevant application products will have great market development potential and space. The smart city and smart building solutions introduced by ADI provide complete software, hardware and development tools, which will be the best choice for interested system developers.
