Bourns Releases New Surge Protection Device

Published By

Bourns Inc. has introduced its new model 1530-1 series power-over-Ethernet (PoE) surge protector, offering high performance and designed to protect communications systems, equipment and installations from damaging surge voltages and currents.

Bourns’ model 1530-1 series helps avoid equipment damage and malfunction due to one or more sources of electromagnetic energy, including lightning, 50/60-Hz commercial power fault conditions, electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transient (EFT), electromagnetic interference (EMI), operation in the presence of a DC potential difference, and operation in a steady-state induced voltage environment.

The model 1530-1 series PoE surge protector is suitable for such applications as data communications, highly exposed Ethernet, telecommunications and indoor installations, surveillance cameras and remote power and communication, among many other applications.

The new SPD series from Bourns incorporates state-of-the-art protection technologies. Working together, these surge and current-limiting devices provide an enhanced level of active surge limiting needed for today’s sensitive electronics.

Bourns’ active surge limiting provides that any current exceeding a preset level will cause the model 1530-1 to quickly transition into a high-impedance state, isolating any harmful voltages and/or currents from damaging protected equipment.

Bourns’ active surge limiting provided with the model 1530-1 series is comprised of a combination of gas discharge tube (GDT) and TBU High-Speed Protector (HSP) technologies, and results in extremely low levels of let-through energy.

Excess surge energy is easily handled by the gas discharge tube up to rated limits. After the surge event has passed and line voltages return to safe levels, the model 1530-1 automatically restores the line to normal operation by resetting it to a low impedance state. There is no need for resetting a breaker or replacing a fuse to address and remediate a transient surge event.

The model 1530-1 series is designed to meet applicable Telcordia GR-1089 Level 1 and Level 2 surge and AC power fault specifications on the data signal line, while allowing operations up to 35 watts (employing both mode A and B combination) at 57 V. Its enclosure is flame retardant and manufactured with a high impact-resistant plastic.

The new Bourns SPD series includes the following models: 1530-1D, with DIN rail mount and no ground wire; 1530-1D-W, with DIN rail mount and ground wire; and 1530-1-W, wall mounted and with ground wire.

In summation, among the 1530-1 Series’ many features are the following:

• Active surge limiting technology

• Low-impulse voltage let-through

• Low-impulse current let-through

• High surge current rating

• 10/100/1000 Mbps data compatibility

• Transparent to mode A or mode B

• Comparable with class-4 power levels
