Pycom has revolutionized the wireless Internet of Things industry (IoT) with their compact, wireless-enabling microprocessor boards. The UK-based company has condensed their boards even further into System-on-a-Chip (SoC) combination wireless modules that provide all the core capabilities of their IoT boards in miniscule OEM packages.
The W01 is Pycom’s condensed SoC version of their staple board, the WiPy 2.0. The W01 offers the same dual network, 1-km range Wi-Fi Radio and Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) connectivity as its “big sister,” the WiPy 2.0, with a ESP32 MCU. The W01, however, sports a mere 20 x 16 mm footprint, compared to the 42 x 20 mm footprint of the WiPy 2.0. The W01 has 4 MB of RAM and 8 GB of flash, which is considerably higher than the 512 KB and 4 MB offered by the WiPy 2.0. Featuring a variety on inputs including a microSD card slot and 22 GPIO ports, the W01 is incredibly accessible and powerful for a chip of its size. It can reliably incorporate wireless operations to any system with ease, thanks to Pycom’s associated program libraries and super-easy Pymakr IDE Python code editor. The only thing the W01 loses in terms of functionality compared to the WiPy 2.0 is an SMD antenna and switch, a voltage regulator, a reverse power supply protection and a few other onboard features, like a status LED, headers and passives.

The L01 offers all the same capabilities as Pycom’s LoPy, a board similar to the WiPy 2.0 that adds LoRa to its list of capabilities, meaning the L01 can be used for systems that need to communicate on sub-GHz frequencies (868 MHz - EU, 915 MHz - NA, SA, AUS and NZ). The L01 is larger than the W01 with a footprint of 40 x 16 mm, due to the LoRa transceiver and its ability to function as a Nano LoRa gateway for telecommunications. It is still smaller than the LoPy (55 x 20 mm) and loses similar onboard features but still has the same memory upgrades, which make the L01 ideal in scenarios where solely Wi-Fi, BLE and LoRa capabilities are required in a small, peripheral-free package.

Pycom’s G01 is the abridgement SoC of their GPy board. The G01 not only gives a system BLE and Wi-Fi connectivity, but also LTE CAT M1/NB1. The LTE-M connection options of the G01 operate on 34 bands from 699 to 2690 MHz worldwide, with a maximum of 300 kbps upload and 375 kbps download speeds on LTE M1. From a features standpoint, the G01 has the same footprint as the L01 and is otherwise the same as the other two condensed SoCs in terms of memory, inputs/outputs and processing ability.
