AL5801 - 100V adjustable-current linear LED driver simplifies low power LED control

AL5810

Needing only two additional components, the AL5801 linear LED driver enables designers to simplify automotive interior, signage, and general lighting control circuits. Comprising a 100V rated N-channel MOSFET and pre-biased NPN transistor, this small footprint is packaged in the SOT26 and will drive chains of up to thirty low-power series-connected LEDs with currents from 20mA to 350mA. The AL5801’s open-drain output will operate between 1.1V and 100V, ensuring that common 12V, 24V, and 48V power rails are catered to while the LED current is set using an external low value resistor.

By generating a 0.56V reference voltage across the resistor, the driver’s internal control transistor helps minimize power losses and ensures a sufficient supply voltage margin. By virtue of the reference voltage’s negative temperature coefficient, the output current is also automatically reduced at higher temperatures, helping to protect the LED chain from any damage, and thus improving overall circuit reliability. In addition, the AL5801’s wide operating temperature range, of -40ºC to +150ºC, means it can be mounted immediately adjacent to LEDs where PCB space is tight.

  • The Diodes Advantage
  • •  Provides low cost, space-saving solution for driving LED currents up to 350mA
  • •  Current is set with one external resistor, reducing total part count and cost compared to other devices
  • •  Negative temperature coefficient automatically reduces LED currents at high temperatures, protecting LEDs and improving circuit reliability
  • •  Low reference voltage of 0.56V minimizes power loss in LED current setting resistors and ensures supply voltage headroom
  • •  Wide ambient temperature operating range of -40ºC to +150ºC enables device to be circuit mounted very close to the LEDs in space-limited applications

Applications

  • •  LED signs
  • •  Automotive interior lamps
  • •  General illumination
  • •  Emergency lighting

DLD101 - 1A rated linear mode constant current LED driver

DLD101

The DLD101 is a 1A rated, linear mode, constant current driver specifically designed for driving LEDs in illumination and indication applications that require DC current regulation. The LED current is programmed with one external resistor, offering a low-cost and space-saving solution. The device has been configured using optimized discretes in the thermally efficient DFN package. This flat and leadless DFN package saves board space and allows for higher integration to the PC board. The package is also thermally efficient and provides higher power dissipation than the relatively comparable SOT23 form-factor.

The DLD101 maintains increased light intensity output of the LEDs and lower bias current than ones provided by BJT pass elements. It also uses a unique PBT or double-base connection BJT to incorporate bias resistors into the package. For example, an external capacitor can be attached across the base resistor for added circuit flexibility.
