Renesas Electronics IoT Demonstration Kit

The insatiable demand for Internet of Things (IoT) applications has the potential to create breakthrough products and service revenue opportunities for OEMs and service providers. Recognizing the need to evolve to a system solution enabler, Renesas Electronics has partnered with top IoT technology leaders to offer their clients a complete solution spanning sensors at the network edge all the way to the enterprise application. A good example of this synergy is the RL78G14 Demonstration Kit. Simply unpack the RL78 board, connect it to an 802.11 access point and view the enterprise application with no programming required. This edge-to-enterprise solution is the result of a partnership with Bug Labs, a New York-based software company.

The joint development platform, which includes the Renesas RL78 and Bug Labs’ cloud-based IoT applications, enables developers to freely access remotely deployed edge sensors, peripherals and I/O pins of a microcontroller, in real time, via a standard, RESTful API. Benefits of this kit include

- An out of the box, edge-to-enterprise solution that takes only minutes to implement. Build functional, immediately useful “Internet of Things” applications that consume and display data from multiple, net-connected RL78-based systems. Monitor RL78 functions remotely via any web connection, on a computer, tablet or smart phone.

-Free access to Bug Labs cloud apps (SwarmTM, dweetTM, freeboardTM) to immediately start viewing and interacting with RL78 data in real-time. Transform I/O functions and local sensor information into a collection of easily accessible web services. Bug Labs’ freeboard visualization tool will allow the user to view sensor data, set alarms and generate dashboards.

  • -  Develop applications using popular web programming languages like Python, Javascript and Ruby instead of low-level C code.

  • -  Access to internal variables of an embedded system with just a few mouse clicks. With μC/Probe, read and write the memory of any embedded target processor during run-time, no programming is required.

    Kit Contents:

    • -  32 MHz RL78G14 MCU board with integrated debugger and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi radio. Peripheral component set including sensors, displays (LCD and Eink), and several audio and I/O interfaces

    • -  Free access to SwarmTM, dweetTM and freeboardTM cloud applications.

    • -  e2 studio: Free Renesas Eclipse-based integrated development environment (IDE) for building (editor, compiler and linker control) and debugging designs.

    • -  IAR Embedded Workbench

    • -  A high-performance C/C++compiler and debugger tool suite for applications based on 8-, 16-, and 32-bit microcontrollers. It incorporates a compiler, an assembler, a linker and a debugger into one integrated development environment.
