Infineon's microcontroller and memory solutions for automotive

For uncompromised functional safety and security for embedded systems

Increasingly, it is becoming critical that microcontrollers are equipped with advanced security features to avoid security compromises and prevent malware attacks. For this reason, the new generation of 32-bit MCUs provides robust protection for a range of embedded system applications. Complementing it, there is a need for the functionally safe systems. Infineon's wide range of volatile and non-volatile memory solutions are architected and designed for it.

Battery Management System (BMS)

Battery management systems (BMS) are electronic control circuits that monitor and regulate the charging and discharge of batteries. The battery characteristics to be monitored include the detection of battery type, voltages, temperature, capacity, state of charge, power consumption, remaining operating time, charging cycles, and some more characteristics.

Key application requirements

  • Capture real-time data instantly in a continuous fashion and retain data on power-loss
  • Write-cycle endurance to log data for 20 years
  • High-reliability nonvolatile storage for code and data logging
  • Memory with high reliability for automotive applications
  • AEC-Q100 Grade 1 (-40°C to +125°C) temperature range

Body Control Unit with Integrated Gateway

The classical Body Control Unit combines all 5 core functionalities of an Electronic Control Unit The number of body functions has increased, but also their variants of these functions required for different vehicle trim levels. For example; one module may support seat movement to bidirectionally lift, slide, recline and adjust lumbar and headrests, as well as heating and cooling but this module, may only include some of these for a low-end vehicle. This creates a need for flexibility and scalability of product families to create a BCM platform that can accommodate easy variants and changes throughout the design to years after SOP.

HVAC

Wide range of products with the exact specifications and functions for HVAC control module applications that combine high performance with high precision.

For HVAC control module applications to function seamlessly you need solutions precisely tailored to flap and blower control needs. For instance, dedicated multi half-bridge devices for flap motor control with potentiometer feedback or an embedded bridge driver IC with a current controlled output stage, flexible charge- and discharge current settings and several diagnostic functions to optimize your blower control. Additionally, semi and fully automatic HVAC systems integrate a system/user-interface and graphical display as well as temperature and humidity sensing.

Gateway

When designing central gateway applications for cars, the two biggest success factors are performance and security. As the central hub for internal and external communications, today's connected gateways must deliver significantly more processing power and data throughput than their predecessors. At the same time, connected gateways play an indispensable role in protecting the vehicle from cyber-attacks, and in enabling new IoT services like car sharing, software updates over the air (SOTA), and predictive maintenance.

Key application requirements

  • enable faster in-car communication and have advanced security features with the introduction of HSM
  • dedicated Cortex®-M0+ for secure processing
  • embedded flash in dual bank mode for FOTA requirements

ADAS

Outstanding progress in vehicles’ advanced driver assistant systems – including lane assist, emergency brake assist and distance control – has put us on the fast track to fully autonomous cars.

When designing such exciting, potentially life-changing ADAS applications, above all you need reliable, fast information processing and a failsafe electronic control unit (ECU). Radar technology that collects information in and around the vehicle and feeds it to the respective driver assistant system is also paramount. Beginning in 2018, highly automated driving will require a minimum of five radar systems for 360°coverage.
