MEMS Vibration Monitoring: From Acceleration to Velocity

MEMS accelerometers by Analog Devices have reached new heights in their ability to measure vibration. While MEMS accelerometers already possess some advantages over traditional ones in size, weight, cost, shock immunity, and ease of use, many CMB system architects, developers, and customers are just now trying them out for the first time. One big difference is how performance metrics are quantified; with MEMS using gravity-referenced acceleration (g) and most engineers using linear velocity (mm/s).

Analog Devices MEMS accelerometers are taking a more prominent role vibration monitoring than ever before. Even though they possess several advantages over traditional accelerometers, their data sheets express vibration readings using gravity-referenced acceleration (g) while many engineers are familiar with linear velocity (mm/s). Luckily, there are a few techniques that make the acceleration to velocity transition easy.
