Analog Devices Introduces Low-Cost DSP Development Platform

ADSP-BF706 accelerates time to market for advanced audio applications

Analog Devices (ADI) has introduced a low-cost digital signal processor (DSP)-based development platform for its Blackfin family of microprocessors that targets demanding ultra low-power, real-time applications for advanced audio.

ADI’s new ADSP-BF706 EZ-KIT Mini development platform targets power-sensitive embedded applications, ranging from portable audio to sound processing and effects. It offers designers a complete, small form-factor, low-cost starter platform with on-board, high-quality audio input/output, large internal static RAM (SRAM) and multiple connectivity options, including USB.

ADI’s ADZS-BF706-EZ-KIT MINI Evaluation Board is designed to be used in conjunction with CrossCore Embedded Studio (CCES) development tools used  to test the ADSP-BF706 Blackfin processor. It also can be used in developing and debugging code, including application programs written in assembly, C and C++. Designers can manage breakpoints in applications, and read and write peripheral and core registers, data and program memory.

The platform also includes DSP Concepts’ Audio Weaver software, which offers an audio module library with code profiling and generation.

ADI’s Blackfin family of 16- or 32-bit microprocessors has built-in, fixed-point DSP capability furnished by 16-bit multiply-accumulates (MACs), which itself is paired with a small microcontroller on-chip. It is designed for a low-power, unified processor architecture that can run operating systems while simultaneously handling complex numeric tasks.

Key features of the ADSP-BF706 EZ-KIT Mini development platform include:
• Low-cost, ultra-low-power
• Numerous audio project options, Audio Weaver software, and development using an Arduino-compatible interface
• USB powered
• CrossCore Embedded Studio development tools
•  Debug agent
• Small form factor of 10 cm × 5 cm
• Push buttons and LEDs
• Full featured one-year evaluation license

Also introduced by ADI is its ADSP-BF707, a small-form-factor development platform for Blackfin microprocessors. Equipment manufacturers can incorporate it in such applications as face detection, vehicle detection, people counting and motion sensing. The ADSP-BF707 platform includes an intuitive configuration GUI and enables real-time analysis of captured video, as well as video output and display through an on-board USB port, enabling more efficient product development and faster time to market.
