RFIDs Applications Expanding Lead Market Rapidly Growing

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification technology used by wireless communication. While the RFID tag cost increasingly reduces, the tag size is shrinking and its application is widening. This article will introduce you RFID’s characteristics and RFID products and services provided by Murata Manufacturing Co, Ltd.

A Good Choice for Replacing Bar Codes

RFID identifies wireless communication by using IC tags that can write and read data among those points without contacts, and also can read multiple sets of data in batches. In addition, communications can be made in only a few meters as long as the RFID reader/writer and the IC tag are within the radio wave transmission range. RFID has been used in various fields, as a new automatic identification technology replacing bar codes and QR codes.

The bands used by RFID include LF (low frequency), HF (high frequency), UHF (ultra high frequency) and microwave bands. The LF band uses the electromagnetic induction method. Compared with other communication bands, it has a longer usage history. A LF band is often used for example, in the wireless communication of the keyless access system of cars. Its communication distance is only dozens of centimeters. Moreover, it has to be used with an antenna having lots of windings, which makes it difficult to be thin and compact.

The HF band exchanges data by using the electromagnetic induction method. Compared with the LF band, it does not use an antenna with lots of windings, therefore, the antenna can be thin and compact. Since the HF band uses 13.56 MHz (a frequency in a shortwave band), the communication distance is relatively short, suitable for a shorter distance application, e.g., one-to-one authentication between a person and an object. Take the near field communication (NFC) equipment for instance; it is often combined with electronic currency such as mobile phone wallet or transportation card, which is also the RFID using a HF band.

For the UHF band, the communication method is using the electric field form with the frequency range at 860 to 960 MHz, located at the UHF band, enabling it suitable for application of several meter communication distance. It can also read multiple sets of data at the same time. Most inventory control and automatic examination are performed by using this band.

The microwave band belongs to the UHF band, using frequency of 2.45 GHz. Since this band covers the ISM band used by microwaves and Wi-Fi also, a potential issue may be the radio frequency interference. Therefore, necessary preventive measures must be taken. Its communication distance is only 2 -3 meters, far less than the communication distance that is applicable by the band between 860 and 960 MHz.

Murata started very early in the development of the RFID tag and has acquired excellent achievements. Murata’s RFID uses the HF band and the UHF band for communications and supports ISO/IEC 18000 series wireless communication standards, which assures international compatibility. Therefore, Murata’s RFID solutions can be used worldwide. The RFID using the UHF band launched by Murata can provide RFID tags and readers/writers. As the RFID using the UHF band is capable of reading many remote tags, it is suitable for inventory control, examination and logistics. The smallest RFID tag launched by Murata can be suited for small-scale product management, e.g., wearable objects and testing vials. It can even be embedded in the product with resin forming. As it can also be fitted on PCB with welding, making your circuit board into a RFID tag, therefore, it is suitable for electronic equipment management. Murata also provides recommended land patterns, which can create a circuit board into an RF antenna. Since it is small and thin, it can also be used on fabrics, suitable for clothing management application. It is also washable without being damaged. Additionally, it can even be made into a metallic RFID tag, providing a good communication environment even on the metal surface.

Murata also introduces RFID tags and readers/writers for near-distance communication using the HF band. The RFID using the HF band is often used in public transportation organizations and supermarkets as a payment tool. It has been widely used in the form of a contactless IC card.

Murata also provides compact, inexpensive reader/writer modules using the UHF and HF bands, where necessary components are integrated on a module, easy for installation in the customer’s equipment. In addition, if the tag is a compatible type complying with the relevant standards, it can be used for reading and writing data on the same equipment.

To evaluate the RFID’s reading/writing functions, Murata also provides an entry-level package for evaluation, including the reader/writer module, card reader antenna, evaluation software and the USB port. By using the USB port, you can easily connect it to your PC for quick reading/writing operation check.

Murata helps to solve problems or increase customer’s operating efficiency by providing unique IC tags, readers/writers and software. The RFID solutions provided by Murata have been widely used in fields such as, retailing, medical and health care, intelligent plants, laundromats, entertainments, etc. It is a trustworthy choice for developers of related application and products.
