In various audio applications, the top priority is high-resolution audio quality. When it comes to portable products like wireless earbuds, power consumption efficiency is a higher priority. This paper will introduce the audio processing solutions used by ON Semiconductor, which may help you develop new products quickly and efficiently.
Audio processors and amplifiers adapted to audio products
Among various consumer products in the market, audio-related products, such as headphones, recorders and speakers, and many electronic products required to support audio, such as laptops, tablets and mobile phones, all require audio processing chips. Therefore, the application of audio processing single-chips with high resolution and low power consumption in such products will help reduce product size and speed up product development.
LC823450, developed by ON Semiconductor, is an audio signal processing system-on-chip (SoC) featuring ultra-low power consumption as well as 32-bit, 192-kHz high resolution audio. It is composed of a dual-core ARM Cortex-M3, 32-bit DSP (LPDSP32) kernel, hard wired MP3 encoder/decoder and integrated SRAM. It is also equipped with analog peripheral functions, such as PLLs, Class-D stereo HP amplifier, 6-band equalizer and ADC/DAC. In addition, noise/echo cancellation support through ON Semiconductor’s proprietary LPDSP32, and the playback speed control function of MP3, WMA, AAC and PCM with VBR, are also provided. Through fine-tuning power management and dedicated hard-wired audio blocks, the LC823450 can significantly extend battery life without compromising audio quality.
With dual-core processor and DSP supporting parallel processing, LC823450 may reduce the development cost of DSP codes and provide several of them, such as noise cancellation and variable-speed playback, without extra cost; with built-in large-capacity memory, it may implement large-scale programs; with hard-wired audio functionality, it may perform audio processing with low power consumption; with an integrated analog function, it may reduce PCB space and cost; its SBC/AAC coder/decoder with DSP, UART and ASRC (Asynchronous Sample Rate Converter), it may help improve Bluetooth® audio quality; with an oscillating controller to switch clock frequency, it may reduce unnecessary power consumption and maintains high processing capacity for higher clock frequency.
LC823450 can be used for audio processing on portable audio products, such as IC recorders, and wireless audio products, such as wireless headphones and wireless speakers. It can also be used for the audio processing of high-resolution audio products, such as high-resolution audio players and other devices that support audio.
ONA10IV, also developed by ON Semiconductor, is a mono Class−D audio amplifier with a 16-watt digital input. It has speaker sense digital output and real-time integrated current and voltage sense functions, which can drive the loudspeaker. The sense data may be transmitted to the host via separate digital output. ONA10IV can be directly connected to 2−cell (2S) or 3−cell (3S) batteries, and has fast automatic gain control (AGC) for brownout protection, which can respond within 10μs. ONA10IV can support up to eight devices, and control shared digital audio interfaces through I2C. A separate bus (MAGC) can be used to synchronize gains in multiple ONA10IV instantiations during a brownout protection event.
ONA10IV is a Pb−free device with I2C fast mode (up to 1 MHz) control, EMI reduction control, and over-current and thermal protection functions. ONA10IV can be used for the audio amplifiers of micro or general loudspeakers, provide speaker protection and reliability, and support smart amplifier algorithms, home automation and other applications. Common end products include laptops, smart speakers, wireless speakers, sound bars and alarms.
Fully autonomous USB Type-C port controllers
More and more electronic products are beginning to support USB Type-C ports, which also brings huge demand for USB Type-C port controllers. ON Semiconductor has developed two new USB Type-C port controllers, FUSB303 and FUSB307B.
FUSB303 is a fully autonomous USB Type-C controller that can optimize applications at 15W or less. FUSB303 can provide CC logic detection for Source port role, Sink port role, DRP and support accessory detection, as well as dead battery support as defined in USB-C specifications. FUSB303 has I2C access with configurable addresses, can support multiple ports on each system, or can be autonomously configured just with pins. FUSB303 has ultra-low power consumption and is packaged with ultra-thin 12-pin QFN.
FUSB303 can support the latest Rev 1.3 Type-C™ Specification, and has Source, Sink, and DRP port role configurations with optional accessory support. Try.SRC and Try.SNK modes can be set as preferred modes for Source role or Sink role respectively. The operating range of VDD is 2.85V-5.5V. When working at typical low power operation, ICC < 10μA. It supports GPIO and I2C configurations, supports the maximum tolerance of 28V DC on ID, VBUS_DET, CC1 and CC2, supports dead battery detection (Sink port role when no power applied), and can be used for 4kV HBM ESD protection of connector pins. FUSB303 can be used for a wide range of end products, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, accessories, industrial products and power banks.
FUSB307B, another USB Type-C port controller, can support USB-PD functions, and is for system designers who want to implement up to four USB Type-C port controllers (TCPC) with USB-PD capabilities. This solution provides an integrated Type-C Rev 1.3 detection circuitry that enables manual attach/detach detection. It can automatically process the time-critical Power Delivery function and uninstall the μ Processor or Type-C port manager (TCPM). FUSB307B is compliant with USB-PD Interface Specification Rev 1.0 and can be used as the TCPC of a TCPM standardized interface.
FUSB307B is compliant with USB-PD Interface Specification Rev 1.0 version 1.2 Compatible, supports USB Type-C Rev 1.3 Compatible and USB-PD Rev 3.0 Version 1.1 Compatible systems, can perform fast role swap and sink transmit, extend data messages (chunked), supports the USB-PD Interface Specification, can perform automatic GoodCRC data package response, sends automatic retries for data packages, supports all SOP types, has VBUS Source and Sink controllers, can integrate 3W capable VCONNs to CCx switch, and has built-in 10-bit VBUS ADC, programmable GPIO and 4 selectable I2C addresses. When the dead battery operation, it can be powered by VBUS and TCPM can be powered by LDO output. FUSB307B can be used in portable, wireless, automotive and consumer products, such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, desktops, laptops, rechargeable docks, speakers and wall adapters.
