New from Bourns, high voltage LC kit for buck/boost and double pulse applications

Bourns Inc. has partnered with Wolfspeed to develop magnetic components optimized for the SpeedVal evaluation platform.

Included in the Buck/Boost Filter module section of the platform, Bourns introduces two custom designed inductors for use as the inductive element in the LC power filter stage as an add on accessory board.

This LC filter enables the half-bridge portion of the main SpeedVAL half-bridge motherboard to be tested as either a buck or boost configuration mode.

To accomplish this, chokes were designed with two different inductance ranges per Wolfspeed’s project requirements.

Bourns offers the following two components integrated into the following Wolfspeed modules:

The Bourns inductors were optimized for the total range of the 15kW current SpeedVAL kit parameters for both range of frequency (20-300kHz) but also a nominal peak operating current of 42A DC.

Features:

  • Litz wire for reduced skin effect and over all AC coil loss
  • Powder core material core loss over the total operating frequency of the SpeedVal kit
  • Toroidal core shape for best magnetic flux path
  • Powder core material for distributed gap advantages over discrete gap to reduce EMC
  • Considerations of core and wire density for lowest total weight of the component

Bourns has also developed with Wolfspeed an inductor, BS501145T, for use in dynamic double pulse testing of the SpeedVAL kit. In order to provide the inductive load necessary for turn on/turn off energy and reverse recovery characteristics for switching measurements, not only does the choke need to provide an inductive reactance but also be “invisible” enough for the fast turn on and turn off rates of the FET.

To accomplish this for a minimum to no necessary compensation for the inductor, the choke needed to provide:

  • Best possible magnetic flux path and lowest core loss for best switching energy measurement of the DUT (Device Under Test)
  • Very high operating frequency (GHz)
  • Lowest parasitic and shunt capacitance to limit extra FET ringing
  • Nominal temperature rise in the inductor windings for maximum current needs of SpeedVAL
  • Different inductance value combinations necessary to complete double pulse testing requirements

An air core inductor was developed and produced to fulfill these requirements.

Bourns BS501145T features:

  • 3 sets of stacked windings to produce 6 different inductance values
  • Spaced windings for minimal shunt and distributed capacitance
  • Screw connectors for spade, banana, and bifurcated terminals
