OMRON: Taking Control in EV Charging

OMRON power relays enable the development of EV chargers with high-capacity output to achieve shorter charging time. From DC fast chargers to applications in photovoltaic power systems, OMRON’s control technology solutions bring the highest reliability, safety and energy-efficiency to EV charging.

PCB Power Relays

G2RL-E2
The OMRON G2RL-E2 series features a low profile of just 16.7mm and is rated for operating temperatures up to 105°C. This model provides a 23A switching capacity, with a long life of 100,000 operations. Features of the new relay include reinforced coil-contact insulation able to withstand a 10 kV Impulse voltage. Clearance and creepage distances are at least 8mm.

OMRON’s G2RL PCB relay family is the ideal low-profile, high-capacity switching solution for EV charging systems. The family offers a wide variety of 15.7mm high single pole, double pole relays with switching capacities of 8-16A, including a high sensitivity type with a coil sensitivity of 250mW.

G7EB
Aimed at distribution power conditioning systems (PCS), the OMRON G7EB can switch up to 100A at 480Vac. Its ultra-low 5 milliohm contact resistance greatly reduces heat generation within the component and minimizes energy waste. As a result, the G7EB experiences a temperature rise to about +40ºC with a 100A carry current. This 40.5x50.5x37mm relay helps reduce overall system size, while its reduced requirement for heat sinks yields further space savings for the system designers.

G7L-X
Some chargers use circuits that enable switching the output voltage to charge both high-voltage battery (1,000V) vehicles, i.e., electric trucks and buses, as well as low-voltage battery (500V) electric passenger vehicles. The OMRON G7L-X series are compact power relays (52.5mm × 35.5mm × 41.0mm) that achieve high-capacity DC breaking and switching between 600 to 1,000 VDC. Designed for safety with 6.0mm contact gap, the two-pole contacts offer 20A or 25A maximum switching current. The G7L-X applications also include photovoltaic power systems, inverters and DC links.

General Purpose Power Relays

G7J
Utilized as contactors, the OMRON G7J series are high-capacity, high-dielectric-strength, multi-pole power relays. They include a miniature hinge providing maximum switching power for motor loads, as well as resistive and inductive loads. Withstanding more than 4 kV between contacts that are different in polarity, and between the coil and contacts, they are also immune to contact chattering for momentary voltage drops of up to 50% of rated voltage. The G7J standard models are approved by UL and CSA.
