TDK Corp. and its EPCOS division have introduced new surface-mount technology (SMT) transponder coils for the automotive industry that feature extremely compact dimensions.

The new TC1210 EPCOS SMT transponder coils are available in two versions—one with an inductance value of 1.08 mH and the other with an inductance value of 1.34 mH, and are suitable for operation in either the X- or Y-axis. Further, measuring only  3.2 mm x 2.5 mm x 2.2 mm, they are the smallest transponder coils available today.

Also introduced is the TC1812 EPCOS transponder coil, measuring 4.5 mm x 3.2 mm x 3.2 mm. Suitable for operation in the Z-axis, the TC1812 and offers an inductance of 2.38 mH.

The light weight of these two products—only 50 mg and 120 mg respectively, or about a third less than predecessors—and laser-welded terminals of the windings provide excellent stability, making them appropriate for such applications as tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) or other automotive solutions that experience high acceleration force.

The transponder coils feature a center frequency of 125 kHz, and comply with the AEC-Q200 standard. The AEC (Automotive Electronics Council) designates reliability or qualification standards for automotive electronic components in the United States. In particular, the AEC-Q200 standard is set to confirm the high reliability of high-temperature/high-humidity resistance, thermal shock resistance, and durability.

The new TDK/EPCOS SMT transponder coils also are compliant with Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives.

TDK is a leading electronics company established in 1935 to commercialize ferrite, a key material in electronic and magnetic products. TDK’s portfolio today includes electronic components, modules and systems marketed under the product brands TDK and EPCOS. The company also manufactures power supplies, magnetic application products, energy devices, and flash memory application devices.

TDK’s EPCOS division, based in Munich, Germany, offers ceramic components, RF modules, ferrites, surge arresters, EMC filters, non-linear resistors, capacitors, surface acoustic wave components, and inductors.
