A Closer Look at How the Han-Modular® Connector Series Works

Why are more and more engineers using the Han-Modular® connector series? It's because this connector series allows them to design a custom connector with off the shelf stock product. The connector system itself is flexible; it allows the engineers to interchange modules at any point during their design process, all the way up into the last minute.

It's also very, very space savings when you start combining multiple circular connectors into one rectangular, so it makes the transition from hard wiring to connectorization and the transition from circular to rectangular connectorization much, much easier. We have modules for every one of these connectors. High power circular, pneumatics, Ethernet, fiber, D-subs, all of this can be combined into a connector like this, and you can see on this panel, the space savings.

There are four connectors here, here is one HARTING connector. The beauty of this connector series is you can change a module at any point throughout your design process, beginning to end, it doesn't matter. You can add another circular connector, you can add another fiber optic module at any point, and what it really does is it removes the headache and the unknowns from your design process. This means that you can ship your equipment, you know that it's going to get installed in the right way. There's no miswires the day it's supposed to get installed, you've already tested before it shipped, so essentially when your equipment ships, when start-up time comes, you know that it's going to work. There's no guessing. So how does the connector system work? Essentially, you as an engineer choose the internals of the connector. It could be one module, it could be 12. It could be up 218 pins, it could be just two pins plus a ground. It doesn't matter. At the core of the connector system are the modules. You could essentially put one module in one hood and housing or in this scenario, you could put six. Simply put the modules into the frame, close the frame that goes into the shell.

The connector series adapts to what you're trying to do with your equipment. It could be a stainless hood and housing, it could be a solution as a docking frame. This docking frame, you see there are no hood and housing, it simply slides together, so think of a sliding drawer application.

We also have what we call Han® on PCB, so this is the external part of your cabinet. So look at this as your PCB, Han® on PCB, these are adapters, so you eliminate all of the wires, and that is truly, truly a space saving design. Launched in the mid '90s originally with six modules, only for power, signal, pneumatics and co-ax, we have now developed over 100 different modules, which allows you now to combine power, signal, data, pneumatics, Ethernet, fiber, co-ax, you name it, into one connector. That's only the beginning of this connector series.

The future is what we call smart Han®. It's moving intelligence into the connector. It's no longer just a mechanical means of disconnecting something. So think of moving intelligence that was in a cabinet, now into the connector interface on the edge of your panel, which now means you can put Ethernet switching into the connector, you can put surge protection normally on a DIN rail into your connector, or identification.

A connector is no longer just a connector. We've made them smart. So, essentially, plug and play solutions means just that plug and play.
