Cree’s Bright Advantage in Horticulture Lighting

In indoor urban or vertical farms where crops such as tomatoes and lettuce grow, LED lighting has increased production while decreasing power consumption. For many forward-thinking growers, Cree LED lighting has proven to be the best source for indoor operations.

Horticulture LED systems combined with spectral science have revealed incredible effects, including using light to speed growth and produce more marketable crops, and changing the wavelength of light to alter the flavor of foods. LED-lit farms and greenhouses can also provide higher yield because LEDs can be tweaked to meet specific plants’ needs during their various stages of growth. But not only do LEDs save on growers’ electric bills, they reduce other costs as well. Without radiant heat blasting plants from above, growers can use less water because there’s less evaporation. Growers can also place the light source closer to the plants, resulting in a reduction of space required or denser farms. And if keeping a grow space cool is a challenge, LEDs will cut energy costs because they reduce the need for air conditioning.

There are many approaches to designing the spectral content for horticulture light, depending on the objective. For example, blue and red LEDs are used to match peak chlorophyll absorption, white and red LEDs can match the traditional high pressure sodium (HPS), and white LEDs alone mimic the full spectrum of sunlight. Regardless of the approach, Cree can provide you with the best LEDs available.

Simply put, Cree has the widest range of white and color LEDs optimized for horticulture lighting. Its LEDs deliver the industry’s highest Photosynthetic Photon Flux (PPF), efficiency, and reliability to enable the replacement of HPS while using less power. Cree’s white LEDs deliver the full spectrum of light to mimic natural sunlight, while its royal blue, green, photo red, and far red LEDs deliver high PPF in the wavelengths best suited for the different stages of plant growth. The combination of consistent package, footprint, and drive levels allow for easy tuning of spectral content at the luminaire level to adapt the light to the needs of various crops. Built on Cree’s high-reliability ceramic package technology, the lighting-class manufacturer’s LEDs deliver excellent R90/L90 lifetimes, even in extreme conditions.

As shown in the table above and below, Cree has the advantage when it comes to horticulture LEDs. Cree XLamp XP-E and XQ-E High Efficiency Photo Red LEDs deliver the industry’s highest output and efficiency, and the XLamp XPG-3 LED supplies the highest PPF output. The XP-E High Efficiency Photo Red LED is the highest efficiency 660nm LED in the market, delivering up to 6.08 μmol/sec PPF output at 85°C. Delivering the highest PPF Density, the XQ-E High Efficiency Photo Red LED delivers up to 5.39 μmol/sec at 85°C from a package footprint of just 1.6 x 1.6 mm.
