Low-Power Wireless IoT Connectivity SoCs from ON Semiconductor

ON Semiconductor is an industry leading supplier of electrical components for use in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Their new products include two low-power, IoT wireless System-on-Chip (SoC) modules, designed to support almost any 2.4 GHz application imaginable. The NCH-RSL10-101Q48-ABG, or RSL10, is the newest in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) SoC modules, and the NCS36510MNTXG, or NCS36510, is their newest IEEE 802.15.4-2006 compliant wireless SoC.

The incredibly flexible, low power SoCs facilitate most BLE v5 and other 2.4 GHz wireless protocols while being energy and space efficient. These features makes the set of wireless chips ideal for applications across the IoT, including medical and wearable products. Both ON Semiconductor’s new SoCs are based around the powerful ARM Cortex-M3 processor. The MCU has a 32-bit data resolution with up to 48 MHz of clocking speed. Both chips also feature a space-efficient 36 mm2 footprint.

The RSL10 also features an LPDSP32 core. The dual core architecture gives the SoC a 62.5 to 2000 kbps data rate range and has 384 kB of flash and audio codec capabilities. The RSL10 also offers the industry’s lowest power/current consumption, with a maximum of 1.8 mA while streaming 7 kHz audio in either TX or RX.

The NCS36510 combines the ARM Cortex-M3 processor with 640 kB of flash and 48 kB of RAM, as well as a true random number generator and AES 128/256 encryption engine for security. These all give the NCS36510 an unprecedented ability to operate as a wireless transceiver with both minimal energy consumption and external componentry. The versatile SoC is designed for use in Thread, ZigBee or WirelessHART systems.
