Selection Guide for DC-DC Power Regulators

The METCOM MPX series of power inductors from KEMET provides designers with the flexibility to use different case sizes based on requirements, while maintaining the key parameters needed, such as stable inductance and current capabilities. When sizing and choosing a DC-DC regulator for your project, there are many different variables to consider. Initially, the basic inductance vs. voltage relationship must be calculated, followed by definition of the application voltage. If voltage in is greater than voltage out, it’s advised to use a buck converter. If the opposite is true, it’s advised to use a boost converter. After that, the switching frequency and inductance size of the regulator must be considered.
