Infineon's power conversion solution for energy storage systems

Empowering the future of energy storage

In the face of ever-increasing global energy consumption and stringent carbon emission regulations, transitioning to renewable energy sources presents unprecedented challenges in ensuring reliable energy delivery. Consequently, the demand for energy storage systems to store excess energy is ascending. A crucial element of these systems is the Power Conversion System (PCS) – the vital intermediary between large banks of (DC) batteries, the storage component, and the (AC) power grid.

The power conversion system (PCS) plays a crucial role in facilitating AC/DC and DC/AC conversion. It manages the energy flow, directing it into the batteries for charging or converting it from battery storage to AC, supplying it to the grid. For PCS solutions below 30 kW, Infineon offers discrete components like OptiMOS™, CoolMOS™, and CoolSiC™ MOSFETs, along with CoolGaN™ for advanced, fast switching designs, are optimal. On the other hand, for power levels above 100 kW, the modular approach using CoolSiC™ and IGBTs modules, along with highly integrated 3-level Easy modules, offers the most economical advantages.

The intermediate range requires a case-by-case analysis to determine whether discrete or module solutions are more suitable. For each switch, a driver is necessary, and to control these drivers, Infineon provides the fitting EiceDRIVER™ gate driver ICs, along with XMC™ and current sensor solutions. To complete the range and ensure data protection and security, Infineon offers OPTIGA™ products.
