TDK Presents a New Series of EPCOS MFP Film Capacitors

Published By

TDK Corp. has introduced a new series of metallized polypropylene (MFP) film capacitors from the company’s EPCOS division. Thanks to their use of MFP technology with internal series connection, the new film capacitors feature high pulse strength and current capability, and are particularly suitable for high voltages ranging from 400 VDC to 2500 VDC.

Typical applications for the new MFP film capacitors include switch-mode power supplies or resonant circuits, and other applications in which high voltages and currents occur, and those that require smoothing (evening out of fluctuations in a signal), high-frequency AC loads, and electronic ballasts that limit the amount of current in an electric circuit.

The new capacitors are also suitable for high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, which produce light by means of an electric arc between tungsten electrodes. The new capacitors from TDK/EPCOS, in the series ranging from B32682 through B32686, offer a capacitance range extending from 0.47 nF to 1.5 μF.

The permissible operating temperature of these MFP film capacitors ranges from -55 °C to +110 °C. The new components are available with a lead spacing between 15 mm and 37.5 mm.

The new film capacitors also feature dielectric construction—that is, the polypropylene cylindrical winding is an efficient supporter of an electrostatic field while dissipating minimal energy in the form of heat. The polypropylene is metalized on one side. Metal foils are internally connected in series for greater safety.

The capacitors feature good self-healing properties, and are compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.

Note: These capacitors are not suitable for across-the-line applications. For across-the-line applications, TDK/EPCOS offers another new series of capacitors designed for X1 circuits, which boast an extended voltage range, as well as for X2 circuits that are humidity resistant.

TDK is a leading electronics company established in 1935 to commercialize ferrite, a key material in electronic and magnetic products. TDK's portfolio today includes electronic components, modules and systems marketed under the product brands TDK and EPCOS. The company also manufactures power supplies, magnetic application products, energy devices, and flash memory application devices.

TDK’s EPCOS division, based in Munich, Germany, offers capacitors, ceramic components, EMC filters, inductors, non-linear resistors, RF modules, surface acoustic wave components, surge arresters and ferrites.
