Introducing the Curiosity Development Board by Microchip

The new Curiosity development board by Microchip is a cost-effective product geared toward first-time users, makers, and anyone looking for a rapid prototyping development board. The fully integrated, feature-rich Curiosity is perfect for improving designs or starting projects from the ground up. Please take a few moments to watch this video and see how the Curiosity can work for you.

Hi, I'm John Mouton, Senior Applications Project Manager for Microchip Technologies 8-Bit Microcontroller division and designer of the Curiosity Development Board. In this video, I would like to give a basic overview of all the features available on the board.

Curiosity is a cost effective, fully integrated, 8-bit development platform targeted at first-time users, makers, and those seeking a feature rich, rapid prototyping development board. Curiosity was designed from the ground up to take full advantage of microchips MPLAB X integrated development environment XZ8C compiler and MP Lab co-configurator. Curiosity includes an integrated programmer/debugger, requires no additional hardware to get started, and supports 8, 14 and 20 pin 8-bit PIC microcontrollers that are low voltage programmable.

Curiosity comes equipped with a 20 pin, PIC 16F1619 8-bit microcontroller chalked full of Microchips core independent peripherals that off-load core intensive tasks from the CPU allowing it to focus on other application tasks. The board also has pin breakout headers on both sides of the microcontroller to allow for flexibility of pin usage.

Power for the Curiosity Development Board can be supplied from three different sources. The USB connector, a 9-volt DC wall supply, or an external variable bench power supply. So no matter which power source you choose, power to the microcontroller can be switched from 5 volts or 3.3 volts depending on your application needs. We have also put footprints for a power source safety circuit to prevent over-voltage of the microcontroller from multiple power sources.

Curiosity is equipped with a master reset and an application power source header footprint for application flexibility.

The board features the mikroBUS footprint to give your application expansion capabilities with any of the mikroElektronika Click Boards, thus helping to make your IoT design idea a reality.

Out of the box, Curiosity offers several options for user interface including a physical switch, an mTouch capacitive button, and on-board potentiometer and LEDs. In addition, Microchips Bluetooth Low Energy RN4020 communications module can easily be added using the provided footprint.

As you can see, the Curiosity Development Board is a perfect platform to harness the power of modern 8-bit PIC microcontrollers to improve existing designs or to spur new creative ideas.
