Liquid Measurements - From Water to Blood

Historically, single-read measurements of various bodily fluids were taken to help evaluate a patient’s health. As technology has advanced recently though, it has become a possibility to perform continuous analysis of these things using impedance measurements. Simply put, impedance is a measurement of the amount of resistance presented by a circuit to a voltage change. In medical applications, impedance measurements of various bodily fluids can highlight irregularities that should be investigated further. 

There many types of impedance measurements available for use with fluids:

  ● Potentiostat. Measures and controls the voltage between a working electrode (WE) and a reference electrode (RE). 
  ● Amperometric. Applies a bias voltage to the sensor and measures the response current.
  ● Cyclic Voltammetry. Measures function electrochemically, whereby the potential of an electrochemical cell is slowly increased and then linearly decreased 
  ● Conductivity Measurement. Based on the determination of ohmic resistance between two electrodes placed in a liquid.
  ● pH Measurement. Based on the principle of a half-cell reaction and dependant on the H+ ion concentration, this method measures the resultant voltage which has a linear relationship with the pH value.
  ● Electrochemical Impedance Analysis. Measures the impedance of an electrochemical cell or sensor across an entire series of different frequencies. Important because it self-analyzes and self-corrects over time.
