Easy-to-use IoT Product Development Platform

Learn how the ON Semiconductor IoT Development Kit (IDK) addresses the challenges of the Internet of Things with a far less restricted, completely modular approach. This IDK won a 2017 IoT Evolution Product of the Year Award from IoT Evolution magazine and presents engineers with a ready-to-use single platform that exhibits a high degree flexibility. The Internet Things (IoT) is the culmination of progress that has been made in several interrelated technology disciplines in recent years. Through major advances in wireless connectivity and sensing, as well as support provided by processing, control and power management devices, the stage is set for widespread IoT deployment. ON Semiconductor continues to lead the progression of IoT technology with the evolution of its game-changing IoT Development Kit (IDK).!

IoT Development Kit addresses the challenges of the Internet of Things

The hottest keyword in technology today is the IoT. However, so far semiconductor vendors have not adequately seized the total range of opportunities the IoT embodies, offering just single board solutions that have fixed connectivity and sensor options. This simply isn’t enough. What is needed is a far less restricted, completely modular approach.

ON Semiconductor recognized early on that something needed to be done about the disjointed situation existing between the hardware and software of IoT/IIoT development. Its technical staff were given the job of attempting to bridge this gap − bringing a solution to market that covered both distinctive types of competency. The objective was to provide hardware engineers (who had little knowledge of cloud-based software development) with an out-of-the-box solution via which they could access cloud-based services, while at the same time giving more experienced embedded software experts provision to change to another cloud service provider or to develop their own proprietary services from the ground up.

The result of this endeavor was the ON Semiconductor IoT Development Kit (IDK). This IDK with exceptional innovation has won a 2017 IoT Evolution Product of the Year Award from IoT Evolution magazine and IoT Evolution World, the leading magazine and website covering IoT technologies. This product presents engineers with a ready-to-use single platform that exhibits a high degree flexibility, upon which the demands of both hardware and software are fully accommodated.

New IoT Development Kit features expanded portfolio of software applications for IoT objects based on ARM® Cortex®-M3 technology with extensive connectivity, sensor and actuator options. Out-of-the-box solutions from ON Semiconductor enable engineers to accelerate cloud-based IoT development projects. Encompassing both hardware and software elements, this multi-faceted product, with a unique modular construction, presents a configurable platform that enables engineers to evaluate, develop and release to market highly differentiated IoT systems in the shortest possible timeframes. The inherent flexibility of the IDK means that it has the necessary scope to address a broad spectrum of industry sectors - including environmental monitoring, healthcare, home/building automation, industrial controls, and wearable electronics.

The IDK’s baseboard features the company’s advanced NCS36510 system-on-chip (SoC), with a low power-optimized 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 core, running the ARM mbed™ OS. By attaching different daughter boards to the Wi-Fi enabled IDK baseboard, a wealth of connectivity protocols enabled by the company’s ultra-low power radios (SIGFOX, Thread, EnOcean, Wireless Mbus, Bluetooth® Low Energy, ZigBee, PoE, CAN, etc.), sensors (temperature, moisture, ambient light, proximity and pressure, along with heart rate monitoring and biosensor interfaces) and actuators (with stepper and brushless motor driving, plus the ability to drive LED strings) can be added to the system. In addition, the portfolio includes support for the numerous functions important for implementing security, including encryption, secure debug, secure boot, and authentication.

This is complemented on the software side by an Eclipse-based integrated development environment (IDE) that includes a C++ compiler, debugger and code editor. A comprehensive set of application examples, use cases and related libraries have also been incorporated into the package, in order to facilitate the process of taking IoT designs from the initial concept phase through to full-scale deployment. In addition to the default cloud software platform, support for industry standard Cloud connectivity protocols (MQTT and REST) allows for the utilization of other widely used IoT cloud service providers.

The IDK product recommendation tool provides a convenient, step-by-step process to select the correct configuration for your design and to place an order. Available daughter boards include SIGFOX, PoE, and CAN connectivity; motion, ambient light, and touchpad sensing; and stepper motor, BLDC motor and dual LED driver actuation. ON semiconductor also provides EnOcean, Thread and Wireless Mbus and BLE support, as well as options to support unique temperature, moisture, proximity and pressure sensing devices.

ON Semiconductor IDK continues to drive the progression of IoT by providing energy efficient hardware and software elements, coupled with the node to cloud platforms to enable design engineers to evaluate, prototype, and deploy IoT products and solutions to market with greater speed and efficiency, and with fewer design iterations. Soon, it will be the top choice for IoT application developers.
