Nexperia application specific MOSFETs

Optimized to your needs

As designers push the boundaries of application performance, it is increasingly crucial to understand how the MOSFET will be used in the application. In the past a standard power switch with a given figure of merit (FOM) would essentially work in any application. However, to address specific application requirements or functionality, it is increasingly necessary to optimize a set of MOSFET parameters to best match those requirements. For example, applications may require soft-start, extended Safe Operating Area, reliable linear mode performance, or enhanced protection. At Nexperia we combine our proven MOSFET expertise with broad application understanding to create an expanding range of application specific MOSFETs.

Automotive ASFETs for Repetitive Avalanche

Guaranteed repetitive avalanche performance, automotive qualified

When using MOSFETs to power inductive loads such as driving solenoids, most circuit designs include additional components to protect the MOSFET when the load current continues to flow during switch off. This can range from highly efficient but expensive boost topologies that reuse the energy, to the less efficient but more cost-effective approach of using a freewheeling diode. The simple alternative option of a repetitive avalanche set-up has historically only been possible using planar technology. By optimizing MOSFETs to comfortably handle repetitive avalanche currents while maintaining a junction temperature below 175 °C, Nexperia offers a truly rugged device that delivers numerous system level savings.

Key Features

  • • Qualified to AEC-Q101
  • • Guaranteed repetitive avalanche performance, tested up to 1 billion cycles
  • • Rugged silicon technology combined with thermal performance of LFPAK, ensures die temperature stays below 175 °C
  • • Simplicity of using a single MOSFET reduces BOM and circuit complexity, delivering system cost and space savings
  • • Modern trench alternative to older planar technologies
  • • Offers increased efficiency and faster switching in comparison to freewheeling diode approach

Applications

  • • Powertrain applications
  • • Automotive solenoid & actuator control
  • • Engine control
  • • Solenoid control
  • • Auxiliary loads
  • • Transmission control
  • • Braking systems

50/55 V for 36 V DC motors

Optimised SOA, high ID rating and excellent avalanche capability

There is growing demand for 36 V DC motors, often being used with multi-cell lithium-ion battery packs, in an increasing range of applications. From cordless power tools to outdoor power equipment and even e-bikes and scooters. To drive these demanding applications safely and efficiently requires MOSFETs that have been optimized for high current, strong SOA and rugged avalanche rating. Nexperia has also optimized them for efficiency with our 50/55 V ASFET range.

Key Features

  • • Nexperia’s Superjunction technology provides an  enhanced Safe Operating Area (SOA) to withstand power dissipation due to short-circuit faults
  • • ID(max) – 200 A in a LFPAK56, enabling maximum torque from the motor and reliably managing high load and stall current conditions
  • • Potential UIS (unclamped inductive spiking) energy dissipation 20% lower than a comparable 60 V MOSFETs
  • • Nexperia’s low RDS(on) characteristics deliver higher efficiencies, ensuring longer battery life
  • • As with all motor applications, there is a level of system vibration that cannot be dampened. LFPAK brings a unique level of board level reliability and ruggedness.
  • • Many devices are offered in logic level allowing them to be switched directly from a microcontroller device

Applications

  • • Brushless DC motor control
  • • Synchronous rectifier in high-power AC-to-DC applications, e.g. server power supplies
  • • Battery protection and Battery Management Systems (BMS)
  • • Load switch
  • • 10 cell lithium-ion battery applications (36 V ‒ 42 V)

ASFETs for Hotswap and Soft Start with Enhanced SOA

Reliable linear mode, enhanced SOA and low RDS(on)

Whether it is in the cloud or at the edge, we truly live in a 24/7 world. So much of our daily lives depend on rack-based computers, communications and storage systems that are always-on. Ensuring these systems do not experience any power disruption and to protect the components on replacement boards when they are inserted into a live system, it is essential that in-rush current is carefully controlled. In normal MOSFETs, strong SOA and low RDS(on) are mutually exclusive. Offering both capabilities in a single device, Nexperia’s specific MOSFETs for Hotswap and Soft Start are optimized for a non-stop world.

Key Features

  • • MOSFETs with a strong linear mode performance and enhanced Safe Operating Area (SOA) are required to manage in-rush current effectively and reliably when capacitive loads are introduced to the backplane
  • • Once a replacement board is safely powered up, the MOSFET is turned fully ON. In this mode of operation, a low RDS(on) value is of primary importance, helping to keep temperatures down and system efficiency at a maximum
  • • The new device enhances SOA by 166% when compared to 50 V in D2PAK package

Applications

  • • Hotswap for communication infrastructure
  • • High performance rack-/blade based server
  • • Hotswap for blade server
