This month, we want to highlight Matrix Orbital’s new display, the EVE2 TFT that came out earlier this year, as well as take a look at some helpful Arduino Shields that you can use for your next project or to simply have some fun with.

Matrix Orbital’s EVE2 38A/29A

Matrix Orbital recently released two versions of the EVE2 TFT. They have similar features, with the only difference being their size and touchscreen ability. The EVE2-29A-BLM-TPN has a 2.9-inch display screen and has no resistive touchscreen, while the EVE2-38A-BLH-TPR  has a 3.8-inch display screen and a resistive touchscreen.

Both EVE2 TFT display screens feature FTDI’s 2nd generation Embedded Video Engine (EVE) that is able to control, render, manage, and display complex graphics on the screen. They also have built-in graphics operations, sound synthesizers, digital filters, and support for multiple widgets that enable you to create your own creative screens and interfaces with the EVE Screen Designer software. This means that customization of your preferences can be easily implemented.

The EVE2 TFT has a standard 20-pin connector and a mono 8-bit linear audio wave playback that supports playback of motion-JPEG AVI videos and landscape or portrait orientations.

Features:

• 3.8" 1U (480x116) - Resistive Touchscreen | 2.9" 1U (320x102) - Non-Touchscreen
• 1U Form Factor
• FT812 CPU
• 1 MB Graphics RAM
• Backlight PWM LED Driver
• Standard 20-Pin Connector
• Mono 8-Bit Linear Audio Wave Playback
• SPI and QSPI Communication Protocol
• Advance Embedded Video Engine (EVE) with High Resolution Graphic and Video Playback
• EVE Screen Designer (ESD) 3.x GUI Drag-and-Drop Design Suite
• Supports Widgets, Landscape or Portrait Orientations, and Playback of Motion-JPEG Encoded AVI Videos
• Extended Operating Temperature Range: -20C to 70C

Integreight’s 1Sheeld+

The 1Sheeld+ is an upgrade to the 1Sheeld, and if you haven’t heard of the 1Sheeld, you're going to enjoy it. If you’ve ever wanted to add a shield to your Arduino Board that gives you  an equivalent of up to 40 shields, then the 1Sheeld+ is what you’re looking for.

The 1Sheeld+ turns your smartphone (compatible with iOS 9.0 and above, and Android devices starting at 4.2 and above) into 40 different Arduino shields by opening your smartphone’s sensors and capabilities to be used as virtual shields for your Arduino board. The physical board comes with a microcontroller and a Bluetooth module to transmit data between Arduino and your smartphone.

It is an easy set-up, as all you need to do is stack the 1Sheeld+ on top of your Arduino, download the 1Sheeld library from 1Sheeld’s website and add it to your Arduino’s library files, run the code, and pair the 1Sheeld+ board with the 1Sheeld app over Bluetooth. You’ll be able to select shields from a list of over 40. It is compatible with most Arduino boards including 5V and 3.3V boards.

Some shields the Sheeld1+ has access to include: Gamepad, Pressure, Voice Recognition, GPS, Accelerometer, Face Recognition, Fingerprint, IoT, Proximity, Orientation, Magnetometer, Mic, Gyroscope, Keypad, Barcode Scanner, and much more! Note that some shield abilities are exclusive to one OS or the other..

Features:

  • 1Sheeld+ uses HM-10 Bluetooth low-energy adapter (BLE 4.0)

  • Range up to 30 feet

  • Communicates with Arduino using UART

  • 7.37 MHz operating frequency

  • Support iOS versions starting at 9.0 and up, and Android versions starting 4.3 and up

  • Can access your smartphone’s sensors and capabilities to use 40 “virtual” shields

Seeed Technology’s Relay Shield

While the Arduino can send signals to control a system, it isn’t designed to control high-current devices as Arduino’s I/O pins have a limit on current and voltage. Seeed Technology’s Relay Shield fixes this problem and allows you to use those high-current devices with ease.

The Relay Shield features four high-quality relays that provide normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) interfaces. It also includes four LEDs to display the on/off state of each relay. The form factor makes it an easy connection to the Arduino/Seeeduino board or other Arduino-compatible boards.

As a precaution, be sure to place two layers of electrical tape on the top of the Arduino’s USB connector, as this will prevent the Relay Shield from making contact. Additionally, do not operate voltage more than 35 VDC.

Features:

• NO and NC relay pins for each relay
• Arduino Uno/Leonardo/Seeeduino compatible
• Interface via digital I/O pins 4,5,6, and 7
• LED status indicator for each relay

Specifications:

• Supply Voltage: 4.75 (min)/5 (typical)/5.25 (max) VDC
• Working Current: 8 (min)/250 (max) mA
• Switching Voltage: 35 VDC
• Switching Current:  8 A
• Switching Power: 70 W
• Frequency: 1 Hz
