Single pair ethernet: Finally going the distance

In this article from Phoenix Contact, learn about the ONEPAIR series of standardized Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) solutions.

Successful implementation of factory automation solutions is dependent on efficiency, in every sense of the word. Finding power and control components that draw as little power as possible over their lifetimes is essential, of course. Before those savings are realized, however, the system must be installed in the first place.

This is where the benefits of Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) technology really shine. Over the same twin-wire cable, both data and power are transferred. In addition to saving up-front installation costs, it costs less to maintain and upgrade over time. In this article from Phoenix Contact, learn about the ONEPAIR series of standardized SPE solutions.

There are 2 main types of connectors in the ONEPAIR series, each serving a specific application.

IP20 Connectors
IP20 connectors and patch cables enable efficient data transmission in numerous fields and industries – for example, in factory and building automation. Achieve a transmission rate of up to 1Gbps at distances of up to 1,000M.

M8 (IP67) Connectors
M8 device connectors transmit data and power quickly and safely from the OT to the IT level. They stand as a new standard in compact connections that can stand up to harsh environments.

Consistent Solutions for Cabling
Single Pair Ethernet is the parallel, high-performance transmission of data and power via Ethernet over a single wire pair through Power over Data Line (PoDL) from the sensor right through to the cloud. Standardized pin connector patterns form the basis for the barrier-free networking of a wide range of components, cables, and connectors. Here, Phoenix Contact is driving progress decisively with the development of a standard – from the IP20 through to the IP6x connector.

Ideally Suited for a Wide Range of Applications
Single Pair Ethernet forms the basis for all Ethernet-based communication. It opens up new fields of application and enables smart device communication. Due to its great transmission properties, even across longer distances, SPE supports future-proof network communication optimally. Following the trend of resource-conserving, miniaturized devices, SPE offers more space for your electronics with space-saving cables.

Single Pair Ethernet Questions + Answers

  • What data speeds can I transmit with SPE?
  • The Ethernet technology already available today provides transmission speeds of up to 10 Gbps over just one wire pair for your application.
  • Why should I use SPE?
  • With SPE infrastructure, you can reduce data cabling and avoid media breakdowns from the field to the cloud as well as device failures. You can establish networks with a consistent Ethernet-based structure so that gateways are no longer needed. Moreover, cabling with SPE is easier and more time saving, because only two wires have to be connected. The 10Base-T1L standard enables Ethernet cabling with ranges of up to 1,000M.
  • What standards are there for SPE?
  • SPE standards are defined in IEEE 802.3. Currently, there are five different standards with different transmission speeds and distances that have already been exceeded. Further standards are in discussion.
  • What standards is the connection system suitable for?
  • Phoenix Contact provides standardized connectors and cables for Single Pair Ethernet. The IP20 male connectors in accordance with IEC 63171-2 are the most compact of the standardized series – ideally suited for control cabinet and building cabling. With the pin connector pattern in accordance with IEC 63171-5, Phoenix Contact provides the same pin connector pattern for robust and industrial grade M8 to M12 cabling – ideal for field applications in harsh environments that demand an IP67 degree of protection.
  • Can I transmit power with SPE as well?
  • Yes, a power of up to 50W can be transmitted via the PoDL standard (Power over Data Line). The various performance classes are described in the IEEE 802.3 bu standard.
  • What can be done with the existing cable infrastructure?
  • It is conceivable that you could use existing cable infrastructures for SPE if they meet the requirements. SPE cables are defined in the IEC 61156-1x standard.

Conclusion

Single Pair Ethernet is the key technology for the Industrial Internet of Things. Twisted pair cabling is opening up new applications in building automation and industrial automation. Components, solutions, and expertise from Phoenix Contact are a proven choice for implementation and operation in your facility.
