3D Imaging Time of Flight Development Platform

3D Time of Flight (ToF) creates a depth mapping of objects within the field of view and is a key solution used for developing digital vision for many applications. The development platform comes with everything a user needs to start working immediately on 3DToF applications, enabling the development of high value features and functions that create product differentiation.

3D Depth Mapping Applications

The 3DToF system is designed to give users flexibility in applying the system in various use cases for technology evaluation and rapid prototyping for both hardware design and software development. Built on industry standard 96Boards formfactor gives a small package that can be easily built into proof of concepts. Depending on customer preferences and development experience different 96Boards processor boards can be used for overall system evaluation and custom development.

Industrial use cases for 3DToF Technology

The 3D ToF system will operate across industrial operating specifications. Objects up to 6m in distance can be detected, and the system comes with easy to use calibration software to ensure optimal operation in the target environment. The initial system will contain optics to give a Field of View (FOV) of 90° x 69.2°. Depending on customer applications this can be changed using 13.8mm industry standard removable lens holder. 940 nm VCSEL technology from Finisar is used to improve performance in challenging lighting conditions found both indoor and outdoor. Laser operation complies with Class 1 safety operating requirements.

The Analog Devices depth compute chip controls the timing of the analog front end (AFE) – from CCD shutter control to laser firing. Data is fed from the Panasonic CCD Sensor through the Analog Devices Time of Flight Sensor to the DragonBoard 410c over MIPI-CSI interface. Sampling rates of up to 30fps are supported. This data is read using V4L2 capture driver and in-turn either feeds it to native SDK or sends it to Host SDK over Ethernet, WiFi and USB interfaces. This flexibility enables evaluation across a wide range of use cases and environments. Native/Host SDK provides this data to user applications for further application use. For ease of application development, the SDK also provides OpenCV, python and MATLAB wrappers.
