NXP’s i.MX series of application processors offers a wide array of varying processor capabilities across a multitude of footprints and architectures. The unique configurations of this processor series and sub series offer both consumer product and industrial grade developers a wide choice of low power processor solutions for nearly any application. This list outlines some of our favorite key developer resources, from a hardware perspective, available for the i.MX series.

i.MX 6SLL Evaluation Board

The i.MX 6SLL application processor is targeted to HMI, home energy management systems, portable medical, and a variety of smart applications.  To get started developing with the i.MX 6SLL subseries, NXP offers the i.MX6SLL-EVK.  This evaluation board features the 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 core, 400 Mhz LPDDR3, 2 SD card sockets, display and audio interfaces, and it’s even compatible with their MCIMX28LCD touchscreen. There are additional development resources for the i.MX6 sub-series including the IMX6ULL-EVK and IMX6Ultralight evaluation kits.

i.MX7 Evaluation Boards

To help developers build applications faster with the i.MX7 processor series, NXP offers the Smart Application Blueprint for Rapid Engineering (SABRE) board.  The SABRE board features the i.MX7Dual ARM Cortex-A7 and Cortex-M4 processor for enhanced security and power optimization, which are very valuable features for IoT applications.  The supporting software allows users to run Linux or Android on the A7 core, and FreeRTOS on the M4, which gives developers free reign over the HMP architecture.  Overall, this allows developers to exploit hardware-enabled security, EPD controller, display/connectivity interfaces, and onboard WiFi/Bluetooth/Gigabit Ethernet.  There are also third party developer boards available, such as the 96 boards and Technexion products, that can offer a new level of developer support.

i.MX8 Evaluation board

i.MXRT Evaluation Board

Featuring NXP’s newest crossover processor, which combines high performance and integration of a processor with the real-time functionality of a microcontroller, the i.MXRT Evaluation kit features the highest performing ARM Cortex-M7.  The processor allows for advanced multimedia for GUI and HMI, featuring a 2D graphics acceleration engine, camera sensor interface, LCD controller, and 3x I2S for audio.  The evaluation board provides various interfaces for a variety of memory, WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS, displays, and camera sensors.  The i.MXRT was designed to target audio subsystems, consumer IoT products, home/building/industrial automation, and motor control/power conversion, which makes the i.MXRT-EVK perfect for developers designing in that application space.
