STMicroelectronics SensorTile Wireless Industrial Node

STMicroelectronics' SensorTile Wireless Industrial Node, STWIN, is a comprehensive development kit and reference design that simplifies prototyping and testing of advanced industrial IoT applications, such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Introduction

The kit features a core system board with an ultra-low-power STM32L4+ microcontroller and a range of industrial-grade sensors for 9-DoF motion sensing, vibration analysis across a wide range of frequencies including very high frequency audio and ultrasound spectra, and high precision local temperature and environmental monitoring.

The Core System Board supports Bluetooth® Low Energy 4.2 wireless connectivity through an onboard module, and Wi-Fi® connectivity through an optional Wi-Fi Expansion Board (STEVAL-STWINWFV1). Wired connectivity is also supported via a built-in RS485 Transceiver. The core system board also includes an STMOD+ Connector for compatible, low cost, small form factor daughter boards associated with the STM32 family, such as the LTE Cell pack. Apart from the core system board, the kit is provided complete with a 480 mAh Li-Po battery, an STLINK-V3MINI debugger and a plastic box.

The STEVAL-STWINKT1B is supplied with an STLINK-V3MINI debugger and programmer which connect to the STM32 with JTAG/SWD interfaces for communication and with a STDC14 to STDC14 flat cable to connect to them main board. It provides a Virtual COM port interface for host PCs to communication with target MCUs via UART, and allows the use of STWIN with the standard STM32 tools like STM32CubeProgrammer and STM32CubeIDE.

Available Firmware and Software

The STEVAL-STWINKT1 Development Kit is supported by a rich set of software packages and optimized firmware libraries, as well as a cloud dashboard application, all provided to help speed up design cycles for end-to-end solutions.

The STSW-STWINKT01 firmware package for the SensorTile Wireless Industrial Node (STWIN) development kit provides sample projects that you can use to develop custom single function applications. The package is based on STM32Cube software technology, and includes all the low level drivers to manage the on-board devices and system-level interfaces.

Two of the projects contained in this package demonstrate data logging functionality. The first, Serial_DataLog, involves streaming data via the USB Virtual COM Port class, which you can subsequently display directly on a PC terminal. The other, HSDatalog, is for high speed data at maximum sensor sampling rates: sensor data can be either stored on micro SD card or can be streamed via USB (WinUSB class).

The STM32 Cube Function Pack FP-IND-PREDMNT1 can be used to develop specific industrial Condition Monitoring applications. There are two projects available for STWIN, the first one – the standard FW that comes pre-flashed on STWIN out of the box - uses the onboard Bluetooth Low Energy Module to connect STWIN to the ST BLE Sensor application for Android/iOS, to perform sensor data reading, audio and motion algorithm feature demo, and firmware update over the air (FOTA).

The second project implements an end to end Sensor to Cloud application, and it is complemented by a cloud application (DSH-PREDMNT) hosted by ST and powered by AWS, as described in the SL-PREDMNT-S2C. With the plugin WiFi expansion board STEVAL-STWINWFV1(available as an add on to the kit), you can connect the STWIN to the dedicated DSH-PREDMNT web-based dashboard to monitor and log sensor data and equipment status. The software collects sensor data and performs spectral analysis for the IIS3DWB accelerometer (up to 5 kHz) and the MP23ABS1 analog microphone (up to 80 kHz) and gathers the temperature and humidity from HTS221 and barometric pressure from LPS22HH.

Another powerful example of Sensor to Cloud application is implemented with FP-CLD-AZURE1, an STM32Cube function pack which lets you safely connect STEVAL-STWINKT1 with the STEVAL-STWINWFV1 Wi-Fi expansion board to Microsoft Azure IoT, transmit sensor data and receive commands from Azure cloud applications.

It fully supports Azure device management primitives and includes a sample implementation for firmware update over the air (FOTA). The package also contains a sample application for data telemetry/device management and firmware update to be connected to Azure IoT Central PnP application instantiated in each user account, and the kit is also Microsoft IoT Plug and Play pre-Certified.
