Infineon demo board using 24GHz radar technology

Take a three-dimensional look at Infineon’s radar demo board based on Infineon’s 24 GHz radar IC, the BGT24MTR1 – the market’s smallest 24 GHz industrial radar chipset.

Infineon’s range of radar offerings provide unique benefits not possible with traditional motion sensing technology (passive infrared technology, camera based systems) such as increased range coverage, small form factor solutions or object detection while keeping identities anonymous.

The BGT24MTR11 is the lead product of Infineon’s BGT24-series of 24 GHz radar transceiver products. It was designed to be used in monostatic radars which are capable of detecting a target’s distance and speed, but not the angle of the target’s position relative to the antenna. Using additional RX-antennas and receiver chains enables also the angle detection. That is why the BGT24MR2  offers two additional receiver chains in one package to build a system with three RX-antennas. To be more specific the BGT24MTR11 combines one transmit and one receive channel, the BGT24MTR12 one transmit and two receive channels, and the BGT24MR2 two receive channels.

The low power sensors cover the whole 24 GHz ISM band with tuning voltages between 0.5 V and 3.3 V - both over the device’s specified temperature range and production related device variations. Only one among many other convincing features.  If you wish to learn more about the BGT24M/L family which is the largest and highest integrated 24GHz ISM band radar transceiver family currently available in the market go to: https://www.arrow.com/en/research-and-events/articles/bgt24ml-family-infineon-24ghz-mmwave-radar-mmic-chips

In addition to the Infineon 24 GHz MMIC chips, Infineon provides a continuously expanding range of evaluation and demo boards to support the testing and development of radar in multiple applications.

The video features the 3D-model of the DEMO DISTANCE2GO, Infineon’s 24 GHz sensor development kit consisting of the BGT24MTR11 transceiver MMIC and a XMC4200 32-bit ARM® Cortex®-M4 for signal processing and communication via USB. This development kit allows the user to implement and test several sensing applications at the 24 GHz ISM band such as FMCW distance measurement of multiple moving and static targets (incl. humans), Doppler based movement detection, Doppler based direction of movement detection (approaching or retreating), and Doppler based speed measurements of targets. The board is already preprogrammed using Infineon’s DAVE™ development tool. Current examples of use cases would be drone landing assistance and drone obstacle avoidance.
