Hi, I’m Laura, an applications engineer at Arrow.com. Today I want to talk to you about a great motor control solution for industrial applications from Microsemi. You probably already know motors consume a good portion of energy, which is why it’s so important for drives to be accurate and efficient. And in today’s industries, drives need to be flexible as well as reliable – they need to support higher functional integration and multi-protocol support.

Which brings me to Microsemi’s Motor Control Kit.   This is a fantastic solution including a fully modular IP Suite, reference designs, and hardware for a range of motor control applications.  Compelling applications include multiple motor designs such as multi-axis, high performance motor designs that require the greatest factor of efficiency and precision, high RPM speeds, and mixed type motor designs.  

First, let’s talk about efficiency, a key part of the conversation surrounding motor control. Regulations to ensure efficiency will only become stricter, so it’s smarter to have your motor control be efficient and cost effective.  FPGAs are a great choice to implement a motor control design because the fabric is the most deterministic architecture available.  And Microsemi’s solution stands out because it is very low power. Compared to other FPGAs on the market, it has up to 50% lower total power and more than 10X lower static power, which really are outstanding indicators of performance.

Microsemi motor control solutions also help you cut down on development time and costs with their fully modular IP Suite with multiple IP blocks. Microsemi also has numerous reference designs available to help you get started with your own high-quality designs.

The IP Suite makes it easy to implement algorithms thanks to a quick plug-and-play approach. Likewise, porting and customization are equally simple through a block-based approach, making these solutions as versatile and scalable as you need them to be.

These solutions are highly accurate and versatile. Microsemi motor control solutions, IP suite, and reference designs ensure rotor speed and position accuracy, as they have a precise algorithm for angle estimation in sensorless FOC application. They also have a PWM with break-before-make logic and dead-time-protection for safety.
