Hi I’m Kristen with Arrow.com and today we’re going to take a look this month’s engineer product picks, with a focus on sensors. I am featuring technology that will help to optimize your design or even inspire you for your next project build. So, let’s get started!

Through-beam Photoelectric Sensor from Omron

The EE-SX670 photoelectric sensor from Omron has a standard 5mm slot, allowing for reliably aligned through-beam detection. It can be wired for either a Dark-ON or Light-ON output, eliminating the need to make this spec decision up front during part number selection. This also means you have direct control over whether you want the sensor to send a signal when a part is not present, perhaps for correct positioning detection, or to send an output signal each time a part passes through the slot, maybe for a counting application or even to use as a photoelectric encoder. With a 5-24 VDC operating voltage, this sensor is perfect for a wide range of applications.

Pressure Sensor from NXP Semiconductors

This dual port, through-hole differential pressure sensor from NXP can measure both gas and liquid pressure up to 10kPa, or 1.45 psi. It has a patented silicon shear stress strain gauge and is designed ideally for microprocessor or microcontroller-based systems. It features a single-molded, durable epoxy body with thermoplastic PPS surface mount packaging, meaning it’s highly resistant to chemical and thermal attack. This pressure sensor is perfect for process control, HVAC, and appliance liquid level and pressure measurement.

Force Sensor from Honeywell

This force sensor from Honeywell is one of the most reliable out there with a Mean Cycles to Failure rating of 20 million cycles under 77 degrees Fahrenheit. As a result, it provides a consistent output over time and reduces the need for repair or replacement. With its low profile surface mount technology, it allows for automated assembly on a printed circuit board. It has a durable patented modular construction and a stainless steel ball for mechanical stability, meaning this Honeywell force sensor is perfect for a wide range of medical and industrial applications such as infusion pumps, kidney dialysis machines, robotic end-effectors and variable tension control.

ATtiny Programming Shield from Arrow Labs

The ATtiny Programming Kit from Arrow Labs, called the ATtinyShield1, is a shield designed to allow you to program a low-cost Atmel ATtiny microcontroller using the familiar Arduino IDE and your Arduino Uno. It’s for those situations where using a full Arduino for an application would be overkill or when your project requires something with a significantly smaller footprint than the Arduino board. With this shield you can load Arduino programs as simple as blinking an LED or as complicated as driving addressable LEDs.
